About This Spot

Step through the doors of Lantern, tucked away on Whitefriargate, and you’ll find yourself embraced by a warmth that feels both timeless and inviting. This family-run spot carries the charm of a cherished neighborhood haunt, where the pace slows just enough to settle into meaningful moments over a meal. The space itself, with its subtle nods to classic Greek tavernas, invites you to lean back and let the familiar rhythms of good company and genuine care wash over you.

Lantern’s atmosphere is a quiet conversation between tradition and comfort—where polished yet unpretentious service makes you feel less like a guest and more like part of an extended family. It’s the kind of place where the thoughtful details—like being offered a cozy spot to leave your coat or a welcoming smile from the moment you arrive—set the tone for the evening ahead.

When it comes to the food, Lantern offers a thoughtfully curated invitation to savor the best of land and sea. The experience stretches beyond just what’s on the plate; it’s in the tender way steaks are cooked to perfection and the gentle balance of flavors in dishes that echo Greek and continental heritage. Something as simple as garlic mushrooms or a fresh Greek salad carries the comfort of home with a touch of something special, encouraging a pace that lets each bite linger.

Sharing a meal here feels like stepping into a story that’s been unfolding for decades—one woven from the memories of family generations and welcoming strangers with open arms. Whether it’s the familiar slow sizzle of a steak on the grill or the quiet hum of easy conversation in a space that feels suspended just a little outside everyday rush, Lantern offers more than dinner. It offers connection, comfort, and a small yet resonant escape into a world that values authenticity and care in every detail.

Here is a real gem in Hull. family owned restaurant. The two sisters have been running the restaurant since their father started the restaurant. It is the best place to eat in Hull by far. It is very difficult to find in the middle of Hull, but what an experience, it is like moving back in time. The food, the atmosphere and the service are in a class of their own. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a unique experience on all parameters. thank you to everyone at Lanterne

We had garlic mushrooms to start and grilled sirloin steak & fries and scampi provencale & fies plus a Greek salad. The food was excellent (the garlic mushrooms to die for!) and the customer service was impeccable, very personal and friendly. We would have had a dessert, there is a great selection, but we were too full... I highly recommend this lovely, family run restaurant in Whitefriargate, Hull. If you like great food and friendly service, this is the place to go!!

From the moment we walked in, the staff treated us like we were the family, polite, welcoming, and so professional they made everything feel effortless. The starters were a whole experience on their own: fresh, tasty, and so good we had to slow ourselves down before we accidentally finished them in two bites. Then came the steak… cooked to absolute perfection . Juicy, tender, and honestly so good I considered guarding my daughter plate like a dragon with treasure. And the stroganoff? I don’t even have the words. It was on another level , the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation just to appreciate what's happening in your mouth. Truly the best in the world. Left the restaurant full, happy, and we already planning what to order next time. Highly recommend! Thank you

What a lovely little place this is. It was like stepping back in time or going to a little taverna in Greece. Very old style, proper family run restaurant with fantastic customer service. On arrival we were greeted and asked if we'd like our coats hanging up. We ordered our drinks and were seated in a comfortable sofa in the bar where we looked through the menu and ordered our food. My husband opted for the fillet steak, chips and onion rings, garlic sauce and I ordered the fillet steak strogganoff with rice. We were then seated at our table. The food was absolutely perfect, the steak was cooked exactly to my husbands liking, the garlic sauce was delicious. My strogganoff was the best I've had in a long time. The staff were very attentive and we felt very at home here. We will definitely be returning, and recommend this lovely little place.

I had the large rump steak and fries with garlic sauce and was cooked to perfection the only slight gripe I have and honestly this isn’t a bad thing just never seen it before is fact you have to pay extra for veg and stuff the staff are absolute credit to this restaurant nothing was any trouble and just genuinely very nice and approachable people I have adhd and hate been closed in so for me to sit and be totally relaxed for 4 hours not stressed is another feather in the cap for the lantern another thing I loved is the fact that your not getting rushed to eat and get out like most restaurants do now a days Overall I would give this place 1000000000000000000/5 thank you to staff for making this awesome evening as terminator says I will be back

I am really reluctant to write this review as this restaurant is a hidden gem. It was recommended to us by friends and when I called to book there was limited time slots available, I definitely recommend booking early to get a table. When we arrived we were a little concerned that we were in the right place, as there way in isn't well signposted but you can't get really lost. Walking into The Lantern really is like stepping into the past, we were seated in the bar area and someone took our drinks order and we were given a menu to peruse before our drinks arrived and we were asked if we were ready to order. We were left to enjoy our drinks in the bar area whilst our order was prepared. All around this seating area are photos of Whitefriargate throughout the years which is really interesting, especially seeing the old shops and what it was like before it became pedestrianised. When our food was ready we were shown to our table. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and for our main course we ordered a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak with fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese as sides. We also ordered the garlic mushroom starter to come with our main course. The food was some of the most delicious food that I have eaten in a very long time. The steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted, all of the food was amazing. We were given the tip of sharing the sides because they are quite big portions and I am glad we did share because we couldn't eat dessert. These photos don't do the food the justice it deserves. The service at The Lantern was fabulous, the staff are so friendly, kind, patient and helpful. They really made the evening for us. My only criticism of The Lantern would be that we were cold . Our booking was for 6.30pm and I can imagine that as there is more people in the restaurant it will warm up, but take a jumper just in case. It certainly won't put us off coming again.

Came for my birthday in August - Had the Porterhouse Steak which was cooked to perfection and tasted fabulous. We were regulars here when we were younger and nothing has changed over the years. Same great menu and great food. Has to be the best steaks in town.

We visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell it's a family-run establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! We then had a Porterhouse steak each, which were cooked to perfection. Alongside these we ordered the fries, onion rings and pepper sauce, which for us, were the ideal accompaniments. After these first two courses we were too full to try any of the desserts, but we imagine the options are just as tasty as everything else on the menu. Despite it being a very busy night, we couldn't fault the service we received. The servers were very attentive and ensured we were well looked after all evening - they really made us feel at home. We can't recommend the Lantern enough. Everyone should experience this hidden gem at least once. We'll certainly be back when we're next in the area!
